Women in Tech – Blog for international Womens day

I’ve never considered myself a huge science buff. Whilst I do work in Digital Marketing, an ever-evolving technology industry, I never questioned how the platform were built or how the technology spoke to each other. Then, six months ago I was invited to an interview at PLM Central, a Digital Transformation company, who upskill organisations with transformative software that changes how the day to day operation of businesses work.

As a creative person, diving into a variety of different projects and industries has always been exciting for me. Initially, I was completely overwhelmed by the technological advancements offered by PLM Central, but I was equally fascinated.

I may not be a ‘Women in tech’ in the traditional sense of the term, but over the last 6 months, I’ve loved learning about how Computer-Aided Design or Augmented Reality can drastically change how industries function.  Appling my marketing skills to boosting the awareness of these complex, yet life-altering, software’s, has been an absolute joy, and women everywhere need to jump in.

Being the only women in the team is strangely something I expected but desperately want to see evolve.  This world of tech is fascinating and ever-growing.  Whilst massive progress has been made in removing the gender gap and stigma, I want to encourage more change, in all areas of science and tech. I’m not a scientist, but have found my place, and this international women’s day, I encourage women everywhere to do the same.

The coronavirus crisis of 2020 is changing the way we work, perhaps forever. Travel bans, lockdowns, and social distancing policies disrupted business around the world, forcing companies to find new ways to work. The trend toward a more distributed, mobile, and agile workforce was already unmistakable, but the crisis has dramatically accelerated this shift for workers who can thrive in the virtual world. But perhaps the bigger news coming out of the crisis is that the larger front-line workforce operating in the physical world participated for the first time in digital transformation in a meaningful way.

This webinar will explain how AR can greatly benefit and support the practice of social distancing in industry.

As communicated by Oracle regarding the imminent end of support for Oracle 12.2.0.1 release (widely known as 12cR2) being November 2020 (without any option of Extended Support), PTC plans to support next Oracle release i.e. 19c* with our upcoming Windchill RV&S Release 12.3.1. This change in supported Oracle database release version means that customers will have to use the upgrade process to get to Windchill RV&S 12.3.1 release, instead of an update.

Because Windchill RV&S 12.3.1 is going to be an upgrade release, customers using Microsoft SQL as database server for Windchill RV&S will also have to upgrade their Windchill RV&S environments instead of an update.

We’ll update all the supporting artefacts, such as Windchill RV&S Product Platforms, to reflect these details.

  • The Premier Support period for Oracle 19c release (March 2023) extends well beyond 2 years standard support for Windchill RV&S 12.3.1 Release.

Toyota uses Vuforia Chalk to Enable Secure Communication and Increase Safety and Efficiency

Vuforia Chalk resolved Toyota’s need for better safety and communications in their plants.

Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) has an 80-year history as the automotive organization of Toyota Industries Corporation, a textile machinery manufacturer. Today, “TOYOTA” is renowned as one of the world’s leading car manufacturers and is headquartered in the city of Toyota, a company town. Toyota has numerous R&D, production and sales locations worldwide.

The Challenge

Toyota’s production engineering and production staff oversee the installation of new manufacturing lines and the maintenance of existing manufacturing lines and plant buildings around the world. Because this work is typically done by local Toyota personnel and subcontractors, the departments that oversee the operations at these worldwide plants must visit each site to ensure that work is done correctly and safely.

If an issue with plant machinery arises at a site, subcontractors cannot make decisions to resolve the problem on their own due to potentially hazardous conditions. Instead, a Toyota employee must travel to the remote location to review the issue. There are even instances when a higher level manager from Toyota’s headquarters must also visit the site to assess the issue and make the final decision on how to resolve the problem. At times, it is very difficult for an employee to travel to the factory site as construction is usually carried outduring the factory’s off-hours and on holidays.

Because Toyota maintains strict regulations for managing confidential information at all locations, including its headquarters, local sites and plants, it can be difficult for Toyota employees and subcontractors to communicate effectively from a remote distance. “Safety permissions based on on-site confirmation are a very important part of our process,” says Ms. Aya Miyazaki from the Powertrain Production Engineering Planning Department. The use of cameras, devices and software that could lead to an information security breach is strictly prohibited. While these measures are necessary to maintain information security, the inability to freely record information often leads to inefficient processes.

The Solution

Toyota Increases Safety With Chalk Vuforia

Ms. Miyazaki and her colleagues found PTC’s Vuforia Chalk when researching a software solution that maintains secure communication and adheres to information restrictions at the same time. Vuforia Chalk is a simple remote assistance tool that connects subject matter experts with workers both inside and outside of their organization via mobile or tablet. Vuforia Chalk combines live video, audio and the ability for both participants to draw digital annotations on their live shared view for real-time visual collaboration and problem solving.

The Impact

Using Chalk, the subcontractors are able to tackle complex or unfamiliar challenges with the help of an expert where and when they need it. In addition to its ease of use, the company decided to adopt Chalk because of its security control function

“In addition to Vuforia’s secure connectivity, PTC customized the tool to ensure that no data is saved on iPads or iPhones. These capabilities helped us meet our internal information security standards,” says Ms. Miyazaki. iPads pre-installed with Vuforia Chalk were distributed to all the plants. The plants loan their devices to contractors for their use.

Mr. Yusuke Nohara, a senior expert in the development and experiment unit of the Manufacturing Development and PJT Promotion Department, heard of the adoption of Chalk through an internal Toyota announcement and became very interested in the product for his own use. He contacted Ms. Miyazaki to demo the tool and eventually Mr. Nohara started testing Chalk with his own organization.

Mr. Nohara says he was thrilled to be able to share the same view as a contractor joining the session remotely. He could teach and communicate with both people looking at the same object. “When there is an error on a machine, for example, I just ask them to put a circle on the affected area and can see one being drawn on the screen. If I want to give them a specific instruction, I can draw that on the screen. This is very convenient,” says Mr. Nohara.

This may seem simple, but the impact of permitting this type of technology and communication is significant. Information is now communicated more effectively than with phone calls. “In the past, section managers traveled four times a month to give safety permissions on-site, spending 4 hours on each trip. We can eliminate this, which is a big deal for us,” says Mr. Nohara.

“For example, when measurements of a tall machine needed to be taken, three people had to spend more than a day to complete the task since the only way we can measure such a tall machine is by a licensed technician climbing up and down the machine repeatedly. Any measurement error would lead to rework,” says Mr. Nohara. Now with Vuforia Chalk, the technician can use their mobile phone to share their view of the machine with someone at the headquarters, and he/she can give instructions to the technician on-site. Only one technician needs to travel to the site, and the time it takes for the team to take the measurements can be reduced significantly.

Vuforia Chalk is helping employees communicate not just between teams in different locations, but also between employees in the same building. Before the tool was deployed, it was often challenging for people to give instructions to someone verbally without an image or a video clip. “If I sent someone to pick up a part, but he/she brought back the wrong part, I had to send him/her back to get the right part. If the verbal description is not fully understood, he/she would bring back the wrong part again. I am happy that we can eliminate such an issue,” says Mr. Nohara.

Overall, Vuforia Chalk resolved Toyota’s need for better safety and communications in their manufacturing plants, while also discovering additional use-cases for the tool across other departments.

Safety permissions based on on-site confirmation are a very important part of our processes” – Ms. Aya Miyazaki – Toyota Powertrain Production Engineering Planning Department

Today, PTC is announcing the retirement of Pro/INTRALINK and the 11.2.1.0 version, released in December of 2019, will be the product’s final release. Pro/INTRALINK will continue to be supported through the planned end-of-support dates for the 11.2.1.0 release, currently scheduled for Q2 2021. During this support period, PTC will continue to provide software updates per the 11.2.1.0 patch schedule and Creo compatibility updates.

To transition customers from Pro/INTRALINK, PTC is offering an exchange of existing Pro/INTRALINK licenses to Windchill licenses (providing Creo data management and visualisation support). Unlike Pro/INTRALINK’s concurrent licensing, Windchill licensing is based on a registered user. To address this difference, PTC will offer customers a 1:3 Pro/INTRALINK license to Windchill license exchange for each Pro/INTRALINK multi-site license and a 1:1 Pro/INTRALINK to Windchill exchange of Pro/INTRALINK single-site license for Windchill.

These new licenses deliver additional value at no added cost and include access to change management, project management and execution, project collaboration, desktop integration and licensing rights to integrate with non-PTC systems. The transition to Windchill packaging also provides the ability to extend the value of your engineering data. For example, grant engineering data access to non-expert users for procurement with Thingworx Navigate. Or grow your solution beyond traditional PDM to PLM with such capabilities as BOM management, classification, supplier management, and manufacturing process planning.

For additional information about this transition, Contact a PLM Central sales representative.

As you know, Windchill relies on the Java environment. However, since January 2019, Oracle’s new policies which required customers to obtain appropriate Java SE Subscriptions from Oracle prevented PTC from providing Java to our customers, even as a convenience. As a result, Windchill products no longer bundled Java with product distributions, leaving customers to obtain and deploy both full Oracle Java SE releases and Oracle Java SE updates (including security fixes).

Since the release of Windchill 11.2.1.0 in December 2019, PTC has now certified Windchill for both Oracle’s Java and Amazon Corretto OpenJDK. This will now allow our customers to have a choice for their Java environment. In addition, we will certify Windchill 11.1 M020, the current long-term support stream of Windchill 11.1, with Amazon Corretto OpenJDK using CPS10.
